Explorer´s Inn RN Monthly Report: August 2008

RNs: Sara Prado, Zuzana Bartakova

Notes:

  • Zuzana in Puerto August 7-9 (for printing Newsletters and visa renewal) and August 26-28
  • Sara in Puerto August 8-9
  • Sara left August 24

TRAILS

Zuzana cleaned Bamboo and Old Collpita and put into order markers on Katicocha, Swamp, New Collpita and Tapir trail (fallen down possibly by peccaries). Zuzana placed new paint marker for Laguna Chica/Terrace trail and Main/Bamboo trail.

RESEARCH ASISTANCE

  • Zuzana collected leaf litter for Filio on August 6 with the help of Michaela Jonakova
  • Zuzana measured walking palms for Jorge Vivanco on August 29
  • Zuzana assisted Filio on August 23 and 25
  • Zuzana assisted Angela and Luiz (RAINFOR Project) on August 1
  • Zuzana regularly watered plants at PUCP Research Station for Eric Cosio
  • Sara and Zuzana helped journalists from “Sommos magazine” with their article, they also provided them own photos on August 16
  • Zuzana helped filmakers from Discovery Channel on August 17 and 18
  • Sara helped filmakers on August 19 and 20

INTERACTION WITH TOURISTS

  • Zuzana helped with transfer tourist to PEM on August 2
  • Zuzana helped “researchers”/tourist to find frogs for taking photos on night walk on August 30

DISCOVERY CENTER

  • Sara and Zuzana helped to renovate Discovery centre, painted tables and completely cleaned
  • Zuzana painted headlines on some displays (where were missing) and re-arranged and nailed some of the displays (to coordinate with new locating exhibits in the Discovery Center)
  • Zuzana made some new wooden pads for the mammal sculls and made a description of specie of each skull and track (with the  of Elisban)
  • Discovery centre is regularly broomed and dusted by RN and now is in very good condition and is daily visited by lot of tourists

MEDICINAL GARDEN

Sara frequently raked (and broomed) the Medicinal Garden. The Medicinal Garden was regularly visited by guests.

LANGUAGE TRAINING

  • Zuzana has continued with English lessons with Alexis and also helped Filio with his English

OTHER / PERSONAL PROJECTS

  • Zuzana continue working on her project, she also checked mammal clay-lick (near New Collpita trail) and 3 near Cocococha lake (with the help of Elisban) for the presence of tracks. She will present results in her report about mammals around Explorer’s Inn.
  • Sara continued monitoring ants for personal project
  • All RNs have helped out in the dining room and kitchen on busy nights

MONITORING PROJECTS

Caimans- Cocococha

Caimans at both sides of the Lake Cocococha were monitored on August 20th by Zuzana and Sara with the help of Alan and Edu. Monitoring was done between 18:40 and 21:15. The weather was warm, full moon was observed on the end of monitoring. In total 30 caimans were seen.
