As you would expect of one of Peru’s best established ecolodges — one that is also heavily involved in conservation work — we make every effort to operate our business sustainably. To limit the size of our ecological footprint, we have a strict maximum capacity of 70 beds at the Inn. The Inn uses solar panels to meet our routine energy needs, including for the kitchen, dining room, bar area and satellite internet connection. Biodegradable waste is disposed of either on-site, with appropriate kinds of leftovers being either buried or left for recycling by the local vulture population, or donated as pig feed to local communities. All non-biodegradable waste is ferried to Puerto Maldonado for disposal. We are also keen adherents of the “buy local” doctrine and purchase most of our food, building materials and other goods from local communities; by doing this, we both support those communities to live sustainably within the rainforest and minimize our own carbon footprint. Finally, we are also particularly proud that the research carried out by scientists based at the Inn has both furthered the science of conservation biology and helped to lead to positive conservation policy outcomes for the ecosystem surrounding the lodge.
