One of the unique things about the Explorer’s Inn is our Resident Naturalist Programme, which allows our guests to meet and learn from trained biologists. The programme was launched in 1978 with the aim of fostering a better understanding of the area’s biodiversity and its conservation needs. We normally have at least five advanced (i.e. doing research for advanced degrees, postgraduate studies or publication) researchers as Resident Naturalists based at the Inn. While they mostly work on their own projects, they also train our tour guides (under Peruvian law, guiding has to be done by people who have passed an official Peruvian eco-guiding course, meaning that our Resident Naturalists are no longer able to guide) and are available to answer guests’ questions, particularly at meal times. In the evening, the Resident Naturalists and our guides give talks about aspects of Amazonian ecology and wildlife. On average, the Inn donates 25% of its total bed/nights to its Resident Naturalists.
